On-Board Diagnosis
OBD is short for On-Board Diagnosis and means that there is some kind of self diagnosis built-in in a vehicle. OBDII (OBD2) is a standard complied to by almost every car built after 1996. It specifies the electrical protocols (J1850 PWM/WPV, DCL, J2411, K-line, CAN) and the format of messages. It also specifies a standardized 16-pin connector (SAE J1962) and diagnostic trouble codes (DTC). The connector shall be be located within 0.6 m from the steering wheel centre. The OBDII connector is often the only way to access any computer node in a modern car, which means software updates can also take place through this connector.
A very cheap and well functioning circuit (ELM327) to start experimenting with OBDII can be found here: www.elmelectronics.com/obdic.html
